Body Oil vs Body Butter: Why Your Skin May Love Both

One question I often hear from customers is:
“Which is better—body oil or body butter?”
The answer is not always one or the other. Both can play an important role in caring for dry skin, but they support the skin in different ways.
Recently, I decided to explore that question for myself.
I regularly use body butter and balm as part of my skincare routine, but I wondered if adding a body oil first would make a difference—especially for areas of my feet that needed extra attention.
After a month of not returning to the nail salon and leaving my toenail polish on, I noticed my cuticles and nails looked tired and dull. The balls of my feet and my heels had also become extremely dry.
So, I decided to create a simple evening ritual for five nights. I began by massaging body oil into my toes, around my cuticles, the balls of my feet, and especially my heels. My feet seemed to welcome the nourishment and quickly absorbed the oil. I followed with a small amount of body butter to complete the ritual and provide a comforting layer of moisture.
The difference was remarkable. My feet felt softer, my heels looked smoother, my cuticles appeared well conditioned, and my toenails had a beautiful natural shine. I even felt comfortable wearing sandals in public without nail polish to give my nails a much-needed break.
This experience reminded me that sometimes the best skincare routine is not about choosing one product over another—it is about understanding how products work together.
Body Oil and Body Butter: Different Roles, Beautifully Combined
Both body oils and body butters are emollients, meaning they help soften and smooth the feel of the skin.
A botanical body oil is wonderful for conditioning and softening the skin. It is especially lovely when skin feels dry, tight, or needs extra nourishment.
A rich body butter or balm provides a comforting layer that helps seal in moisture and leaves skin feeling protected and cared for.
When used together, they create a beautifully layered skincare ritual. The botanical oil helps prepare and soften the skin, while the body butter or balm helps complete the experience by adding a richer finishing layer.
A Simple Ritual to Try
For areas that tend to become especially dry—such as heels, feet, elbows, or hands—try layering your products:
Apply a botanical body oil and massage it into the skin.
Follow with a small amount of body butter or balm.
Allow the products time to absorb and enjoy the feeling of nourished, cared-for skin.
If you enjoy wearing cotton socks overnight, they can be added as the final step to your foot-care ritual. However, I found that after applying the products and allowing them time to absorb, my feet felt soft and comfortable without the need for socks.
Whether you reach for Lavender Dream Body Butter, Happy Skin Balm, or another favorite in your skincare collection, remember that your products can work together to create a more complete self-care ritual.
Sometimes the simplest rituals become the ones we look forward to most.
